When The Victory Is Near.

fix me up a drink and make it stiff

talk me out of jumping off this cliff

‘cause once I’ve pulled the pin

it can’t be put back in

if i’m gonna fight, then I’m gonna fight to win

though it’s a sin

every battle feels like it’s a war

wonder if there’s someone keeping score

when winners are declared

which losers will be spared

and will the defeated be shocked and unprepared

shaken and scared

it’s not the funeral i fear

so much as all the things that seem so clear

when the victory is near

throw a punch and take another hit

though i hate this shoe it seems to fit

my patience starts to fray

but who am i to say

it’s anything more than a decent price to pay

don’t run away

they can thank their gods and i’ll thank mine

turn this brackish water into wine

and once we drink our fill

and chew the bitter pill

and race to the top of a lost and lonely hill

send me the bill

it’s not the funeral i fear

so much as all the things that seem so clear

when the victory is near
